Q. It is known that Christianity believes in only one God. Actually, however, most Christians believe in Jesus and the Holy Spirit as well as the LORD God, Jehovah. Does it mean that God is three distinct Persons?

A. For the salvation of human beings, God divided 6,000 years into three ages—the age of the Father, the age of the Son, and the age of the Holy Spirit—and He carried out His salvation work with a different name in each age. In the age of the Father, God used the name Jehovah; and in the age of the Son, God came in the name of Jesus. In the age of the Holy Spirit, God is to have another name when He carries out His work of redemption on this earth.

Mt 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Before Jesus came, there was no Savior besides Jehovah. At that time, Jehovah was the only name by which people could be saved. We call this period the "Age of the Father" (Isa 43:11). When Jesus came to this earth as the Son of God 2,000 years ago, Jesus was the only Savior; there was no other name on which people could call upon to be saved. We call this period the "Age of the Son" (Ac 4:11).

The Bible shows that there is the name of the Holy Spirit as well as the name of the Father and of the Son. This implies that after the age of the Father and of the Son there is to appear another Savior with a new name in the age of the Holy Spirit and that people can be saved only by that name in this Holy Spirit''s age.

Then, when the Bible says that there is a different name of the Savior in each of the three ages—the age of the Father, the age of the Son and the age of the Holy Spirit, does it mean that God is three Persons? Not at all. Even though God has come in a different name and with a different appearance in each age, Jehovah, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one and the same God. Christianity calls this the "Trinity." The word "Trinity" means that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are essentially one God.

Jesus is Jehovah who came in the flesh

Today, Christianity has been spread throughout the world. So most people, whether they are Christians or not, know Jesus, but many of them do not know about Him correctly. They think that Jesus is a creature just like one of us, and some even insist that Jesus is a failed prophet who did not fulfill the will of God. However, Jesus is in nature the LORD God, Jehovah.

Isa 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

In the Bible, "Father" refers to the LORD God, Jehovah. The Bible calls Jesus, who was born as a baby on this earth, "Mighty God and Everlasting Father." This shows that Jesus is Jehovah. Although Jesus was born as a man on this earth, He is God Almighty by nature.

In the New Testament, we can see the scenes of Jesus fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies about Jehovah God. Those scenes are clear evidence that Jesus is Jehovah.

Mal 3:1 "See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. . . ."

Isa 40:3, 10-11 A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. . . . See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power, and his arm rules for him. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young."

The above two prophecies were fulfilled respectively by John the Baptist and Jesus. John the Baptist was God''s messenger who prepared the way before Jehovah, and Jesus was Jehovah who came as a man on the foundation laid by John the Baptist (Mt 3:1-3; Mt 11:10-11). So the apostles, who believed the testimonies in the Bible and understood the truth properly, proclaimed that Jesus is God.

Php 2:5-8 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!

Ro 9:5 Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.

In the eyes of people, Jesus may seem to be just a weak and helpless man because He was ridiculed, despised and finally crucified. However, He is the LORD God, Jehovah, who created all things and proclaimed the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai out of the fire.

Jesus and the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God (Jn 4:24). When it comes to the Spirit of God, most people just think of it as an invisible energy or power like an electric wave. However, the Holy Spirit also refers to God who is a Person.

Ro 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

The Holy Spirit grieves, groans, prays and speaks as well (Eph 4:30; Rev 2:7). All this is possible because the Holy Spirit is a Person.

The Holy Spirit, who is to appear as a Person, and Jesus are the same.

Ro 8:34 Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

The Bible says that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, and that Jesus is also interceding for us. It is because the Holy Spirit and Jesus the Son are one and the same.

1 Pe 1:10-11 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

2 Pe 1:20-21 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Every prophecy of the Bible was written by one and the same Spirit. The Spirit of Christ (Jesus) that moved the prophets of the Old Testament is the Holy Spirit.

So, God the Father Jehovah and God the Son Jesus are the same, and God the Son Jesus and God the Holy Spirit are one and the same. Accordingly, God the Father Jehovah and God the Holy Spirit are not different but the same as well.

The Savior in the age of the Holy Spirit

God the Holy Spirit is to appear as the Savior in the age of the Holy Spirit—the last of the three ages: the age of the Father, the age of the Son, and the age of the Holy Spirit.

Jn 14:26 "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."

As God the Father and God the Son worked in the name of Jehovah and the name of Jesus respectively, God the Holy Spirit is to come in a new name other than the name "Jehovah" or "Jesus" to give us salvation.

Rev 3:12 "Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name."

We are living in the age of the Holy Spirit. If there is One who has taught us the truth of the new covenant which Jesus established 2,000 years ago, we must recognize Him as God the Holy Spirit who has appeared in this age, no matter what appearance and name He has—as Jehovah the Almighty God who divided the Red Sea and Jesus who sacrificed Himself on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins.

Those who interpret the Bible according to their own doctrinal standards can neither realize the true God nor receive the blessing of salvation from God. Jehovah, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are essentially one and the same God, even though They each have worked in a different age, with a different appearance, and in a different name. We should have a correct knowledge of God and a right faith in Him so that we can receive the Savior who has appeared to bring us salvation in this age.
