  • Environmental Protection

If it were not for water, what would happen? The word, 'Water is the Origin of Life' means 'if there were no water, life could not exist' so, protecting water is protecting our life. UN declared 22 March as World Water Day in 1993 to increase awareness of the importance of water.

On March 22, 2004, 'The 12th World Water Day' campaign was held in Pohang city under the auspices of the Gyeongsangbuk-do provincial office. Last year, the Church of God members participated in this campaign and led the environmental activities; this year, they also prepared food and drink for 1,000 persons and provided it for free.

This campaign, expected to be held at the side of the Hyeongsan River, was held at Pohang Culture & Arts Center because of the rain. In spite of chilly weather, they prepared to work, setting up the volunteer service booth from 9 am. As the appointed time is getting near, the participantsLee Ui-geun the provincial governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, provincial assemblymen, heads of government agencies, soldiers, environment associations, workers, officials and citizensgathered together. People commended the volunteers who were offering food, smiling brightly in the cold. The church members gave glory to God who allowed the opportunity to serve the public, saying, "We just do the work we should."

'Water and Disaster' is this year's theme for World Water Day. Water is the origin of life but sometimes brings disasters to men who cause the environmental pollution, through flood and drought. In the entrance of the Center, photos were displayed; they showed the seriousness of the disasters caused by water such as water pollution damage, drought and flood; seeing the photos of dead, oil-covered fish in the sea, a rice paddy cracked from a drought, a weeping old woman with the floating watermelon on the flooded field, people did not take their eyes off them.

This campaign, gathering about 1,500 people, was held to publicize the importance of water, so that we should economize on using water and try to protect it. Governor Lee Ui-geun said, "Every year, twelve million people are dying due to the disasters caused by water like water-stressed and water pollution. Let us reflect on our conduct inflicting damage on beautiful nature God created, and live a happy life with the nature."

The Church of God received an appreciation plaque from the Gyeongsangbuk-do provincial office in recognition of contribution to water conservation on the 'World Water Day.' Governor Lee Ui-geun encouraged the volunteers, saying, "Man must keep the order of creation. I appreciate the Church of God leading the environment campaign which keeps the order." Park Jeong-won, who received the appreciation plaque on behalf of the Reverend Kim Joo-cheol, spoke for the church members. "It's delightful to participate in this campaign that we can serve the public and practice the God's love. We'll keep on the environmental activities."

From 12:30 pm. to 2 pm., the Church members cleaned the district from the Culture & Arts Center to the side of the Hyeongsan River. There were littered with all kinds of rubbish and filthgarbage, vinyl, worn-out shoes, broken pieces of glass, bowls, pans, blankets. The members picked up the rubbish scattered in every corner, saying that they didn't know trash would be this much at the river's side. Seeing the shoot sprouting out of the polluted ground, they pleasantly continued the cleanup activity.

The Church members deeply thought over the importance of water, saying that they felt keenly the seriousness of environmental pollution and they would use again even the water that washed a dustcloth. They also made sure that they would take the oldness out of their hearts as they did trash out of the district, with beautiful minds considering neighbors and environment than their own self. They gave thanks to God who allowed them the opportunity to practice His love.
