World Water Day Campaign in Pohang City

March 21, 2003, 'The 11th World Water Day' campaign was held at the side of Hyeongsan River in Pohang city, Gyeongsangbuk-do. This campaign was sponsored by Gyeongsangbuk-do with the support of Pohang city and Environment Preservation Association of Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do; and 1,800 people from many environment associations and companies took part in this campaign with much interest. Church of God was invited as citizens' representative, and 350 church members participated in the campaign; they were taken notice of others by their volunteer service activities providing water and drink without cost.

Lee Ui-geun, a provincial governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, reminded people that Korea is a water-stressed country UN estimate, saying, 'Water is the origin of all things and life itself.' He also urged citizens to participate in the environment movement, proposing a water campaign, 'Conserve water, Save water, Love water'
After finishing the opening ceremony under the subject of 'Water for the Future' for an hour, cleanup in water began at 11 am. As the result of cleanup over three hours, including the cleanup under water of the navy divers, about 20T's trash were removed. One of the navy divers told people about the serious water pollution, saying, "I saw all kinds of trash in the water."

On the other hand, the members of Church of God left a deep impression on many officials and other participants. Park Byeong-ho, a pastor of Church of God in Daegu city, said, "If water becomes foul, all lives are lost. We've taken the environment seriously for several years and practiced various environmental activities such as 'Campaign to Save the Han River.' We'll keep up the activities in the future."

TV broadcast like MBC, KBS and newspapers showed a deep interest to participants of Church of God. Particularly, the Daegu newspaper reported the activities of Church of Godvoluntary service providing water and drink without cost and the water cleanupin detail with pictures. City officials in Pohang sent a letter to the Church of God expressing their thanks, and they expected that Church of God would take the lead in the environment activities continuously.
